Purification Island for Amazonian Rivers

In 2017, I participated in a Design Charrette that sought ideas and projects to integrate Lake Ontario with the city of Toronto. Our team worked with the concept of the "Purification Island," which is a floating Water Treatment Station that may or may not serve as urban infrastructure as well. In 2018, when I returned to the Amazon, I brought the idea of Purification Islands with the thought that, once scaled, they would be the perfect solution for riverside communities without access to water. Today, in the Amazon, basic sanitation is an extreme problem. Four out of every ten people do not have access to clean water. 98% of the population is not connected to any sewage system, indicating that this problem affects not only the poorest but society as a whole.

This scenario led to the development of the "Starfish" concept, a purification island with the capacity to generate clean water for villages of up to 150 people and equally clean energy for up to 9,000 people. In 2019, the project began development, and in 2023, it is in the prototyping phase, with the involvement of four companies in the fields of sanitation, architecture and urban planning, naval engineering, and electrical engineering.
